I think for portraiture, people all like "gd looking" beautifying drawings of themselves. Some specific people could do with "character" when that is used as charisma. For example, Werner Herzog does not need to be done in a very consciously beautifying way - but the picture should have his decisive intellectual character. On top of this, the whole picture should be inherently coherent as a drawing, and not as a simple mimicry of a photo likeness.

In todays selfie practices, what is the state of art for portraits? Especially a portrait thats a commissioned work?
We have portraits, such as oil on linen formal portraits, charcoal sketches you see in a lot of street fairs and the like, and photo enhanced DIY drawings made with prize winning softwares, artist interpretation of portraits in their own visual language and technique, and 3d scanner device to reproduce a little doll of a person - with all the range of art works possible, how do we evaluate, or appreciate a hand drawn portrait?
If we look carefully, starting from paint-by-number pictures, to photoshop images, to prize winning softwares of "tracing your picture" type of reproduction, we could see the differences between a hand drawn portrait and one that is done with help of softwares, premade guidelines (paint by number softwares) such as one used in the animation film "A Waking Life"?
Some of the issues are:
1// There is the experience of the drawer/ artist which could be seen through the visuals. A portrait is not only the reproduction of a persons image it is also an expression of the artists feelings - maybe towards the sitter (personal), or towards a specific subject thats related to the artist (self reflexion personal), and also the state of the "soul" of the artist while working on the painting (philosophical) - while doing the portrait.
2// The outcome of software application - for what purpose ? If it is a cover for a newspaper, would that influence the decision for a machine enhanced portrait or a hand drawn portrait?
3// A sitting portrait and a drawin from photograph picture. What are the differences.
4// Who prefers which method?
5// Whats might be the purposes of a hand drawn picture/ portrait ? ===
