After watching this film, makes me think of all the people who left China to go to HK, then immigrate, over 100 years ago, why? Dont we all have a reason?
Maxine Hong Kingston has written about early immigrants in China town.
Similarly, another HK writer Timothy Mo who received a prize scholarship in England and he had written "The Monkey King" from Hong Kong was so good.
There are many many accounts of the lives over the years.
I see a museum in San Francisco of the early Chinese immigrants in Golden Mountain.

And Wong Kar Wai had talked about making a movie, Amazon, called "Tong Wars" or some such title, but it has been put on a hold? Due to covid?

We should have a say in our precious collective oral heritage and our individual, paths of private memories.
I like it very much, with punch and clear flowing pace. Its v Christine Choy.
Quick paced, we see how cc views the world, china, how to let time flow, now is now; yesterday is gone. Tomorrow is coming; No nostalgia. I think this is a v vibrant way of living.
V interesting person because few people could manage to live like this. I like it.
The music and graphics, texts all v suitable to the time of the action. Rich and not wordy.
What struck me v clearly is that, of the three people we could see, 20yrs+ beyond the exile, they each live the way according to their own character and its visible on their faces.
The scholarly one, with a long consistent daily diary writing is just like the scholar that he is. He lives slowly, w peace and calm w orderly mind. The one in Taipei, has become kind of a business man like, he has grown voluminous as most men do, he left china v yg, 18? He built his character in the new home country and has acquired the local look. The successful inventive business man with ideal is intelligent, even in Paris, lives v well, no unhealthy extravagance, not over weight, nor underweight, just right, balanced and accepts life as unending opening of situations, handles everything well. He has a well lived face. He had ideal futures for his home country but it didnt happen so he made himself a reasonable healthy world just as he would have like it not at a scale of a huge, historically complex, cultured country but at the scale of his everyday world. V successful at it too.
Each person comes into their destiny following their character, including cc. Active, outspoken, she is a free person, dares to speak, act and think accordingly.
I alway admire and really like to be able to speak like this direct, in one go, no dilly dally. :)
Its a film on historically important exiled Chinese people living overseas. If the people are not so markedly with character, the film would not be so interesing.
What makes it interesting is that each one of them has actively reacted, chosen a self determined destiny according to respective ideals, constructed a way to be and carried it out as per intention without considerations of ordinary people who needs social settings like "what would other people think", "should not stick out", "should smooth and blend in with the norm" etc.
The film is successful because the characters have v clear personalities. If any of them, say a poet for example -would also be someone with v clear character but would have been in a less socially engaged manner, could have a more intimate scale of self determination - the film would have taken on another pace. The film has simple cut out animations and hand drawn cartoonish characters for scenes that did not have real life footage. This style of drawing brings a lighter ambiance, humour into the heavy subject of the film.
People are the most interesting subjects I like this v much.
Thank you very much for making this film. Itr is v important to take acct of what happened in the world, if its all erased, then its gone. People should not forget how their lives have been interrupted, changed course if they want to remember. We should have a say in our collective memories.
Furthermore:
this film reminds me of another much quieter film, also about existence but not at all in the same breath of existence. Maybe in depth but without the detail co-ordinates of the events. Its a film that has a lot of presence but without human actors in it.
I have seen one "documentary" film with no human in it, just maybe 15mn? Jean-Daniel Pollet, 'Dieu Sait Quoi". Just images of ordinary, humble everyday use objects, with reading of poems by Francis Ponge. The objects are not new, they also had lived a life or continues to live their lives. This film also marked itself in my memory, exactly why? I dont know.
I guess its musical in the way the images are flowing.
Existing as existence?
