"Murmur of the Hearts", director Sylvia Chang, with Isabella Leong star of the movie.
The movie overall has a v Taiwanese soft aesthetic, women are so pretty in a soft way. Sceneries are breath taking set on a small island in the middle of an ocean on East Coast of Taiwan. Slow paced, but near the end all the bit and pieces are strung together into a positive happy ending. Now, there are 4 main characters and they are all battling with family issues as an adult while growing up due to family hardships. The failed boxer who had a sailor father who only comes home v rarely and the son takes up boxing just to let the father see that he is doing something as a gd boy. Boxing was not his thing but he did it to show his father, whom seems to not see anyway, to him, just getting the kid occupied is gd enogh. Missing parent is one of the recurring themes of migrant small folks. The mother - of a small noodle shop on this prisoner island - is a v pretty woman, warm and gets along well with all the noodle eaters, seems like they only eat noodles no other fancier dish - running a noodle shop, but she dreams of getting out of the noodle shop, and the film insinuated that she had a love affair w one of the local prisoners who is an intellectual (plausible because she is imaginative with dreams of a finer existence and he obviously has a lot of interesting things to amaze her with while her husband the noodle shop owner was a common man) - The island is known for holding prisoners, and these might be political prisoners, she had to leave the island, due to pregnancy. Third character is the son of the pretty woman, he was the left behind kid, whom he felt his mother had abandoned him and could not understand why, this turmoil bothered him up to his adulthood, he felt as if he has no home, and no ambition. Abandonment lasts forever in his mind. Fourth main character is the daughter, young sensitive she had always been a dreamy imaginative one, the mother wanted to give her a chance so she took the daughter w her and escaped the island. This main character is played by Isabella Leung. V pretty girl, however here, she is washed in an anemic pallor - i think a bit of a waste. It would be more interesting to have a rosy cheek pretty young woman but still mentally slightly troubled. Also the pictures she painted was not v convincing. I think for the character to be more 3D, her art work has to be more solid, its an opportunity wasted. Any illustration student could have put together with interest and heart a better body of work that ends up in a published childrens picture book - after all that is how the artist, a professional, A'mei expresses herself! But overall, the movie hangs together, and maybe this v pale watercolor wash type of film - both in pace and in visual colors - is the way the director wants it. However, it lacks sustain, we are happy that the outcome is a good one, but there lacks some real sweat and tears and small hardships that such a movie set in such a context needs to make it come alive.
