Wood qin to Carbon Fiber Qin
Moulded traditional method and 3d printed prototype (ongoing)
This is a story about promotion and preservation of guqin art and culture. Started in year 2000, when I was assistant professor in Hong Kong. It was a research project, that included documenting filming guqin master players.
Some mile stones
First there were the making of Half Hundun qin when I have some spare time. 2004
Then, there is the Randqin, a random computer generated guqin music software. 2004
Then, a Half Hundun Qin in the virtual world of Secondlife. 2009
XYZ qin was made in Taiwan, also when I had spare time. I learnt to make wood qin alongside students at the studio of master SHAN zhiYuan. There were two one in shan wood and one in tong wood.
A carbon fiber Half Hundun prototype was made in 2016, and presented in a conference in Beijing to professional qin players. The first person who tested it in public was Professor Zhao JiaJen.
Same qin was shown to palace museum expert Zheng MingZhong.
It was improved later and shown in New York Qin Society, tested by PeiYou Chang. Video here.

XYZ has a second phase which was with 3D printing method. I tried in 2017 and presented at MakerFaire Paris. Simple 3D printing a musical instrument has then been tested by people on the violin. So simple printing will work, but the sound will be not as good as the wood. Therefore it needs more than 3D printing and I had thought about carbon fiber as a soundboard coating. This is still ongoing.
