Movie by Zhang YiMou, on the Nankin occupation period. Some school girls, prostitutes, and a western (white) man whos profession is undertaker comes to hide in a grand cathedral. Circumstances makes the undertaker into the Father, and the Prostitutes into school girls. They go in the places of the school girls to the camp of the Japanese soldiers to entertain the soldiers. Lots of bombing scenes, running around, dialogue quick and protocolaire, girls singing in the soft house of pleasure tunes as compared to the school girls hymnes. Everything is glamourised, false. Its based on a novel. How was the original novel? In anycase the movie is quick and easy, eye candies, but not too much. Dialogues of the prostitutes are contradictory, sometimes sentimental and other times rough and coarse, there is no development of the characters. We are looking at puppets. Glamourised puppets of pretty women. This movie had a huge budget, but the results are not visible.

genre: drama, retiring actrice and the road to success
Bette Davis is superb, Marilyn Monroe plays a bit part, but v sweet and humourous part, like an angel. Anne Baxter is the evil Eve. Dialogue v good. Sentiments believable. Depth, and variety. Grand cinema.

Irene is a single girl, nothing goes right. She works at La Defense in an office with ultra thin stainless steel bureaus and clear window to beautiful skylines. From a comfortable family she longs for a real boy friend but things just didnt go well. One man after another turns out to be phony. Love through internet. A few scenes of how real people prefer to function through internet and not real life. Cecil de france is charming, natural, has a normal healthy woman's body. She embodies good common sense. Romantic comedy, love story. Light as air.

Cremaster 2***half (year 1999)
genre: "débauche spectaculaire"-spectacular debauchery- graded by French newspaper "Liberation". :)
Recommended: To be watched and not to be understood... still looks interesting today.
Matthew Barney's movie using high quality everything, shown in Museum of Modern Art in Paris and New York, no DVD available, only in film programs at art house cinemas.
The film features many famous art world celebrities and visually very sharp and provocative in many ways. One of the actress is the world famous smallest waist woman, credited as "Anonymous". She had a transparent corset, and plays the role of Queen Bee... with drones etc.
Anyway. Go see it, if you have a moment and its showing in town. Rare erotic tension - partly due to visual sexual explicitenss with glossy costumes, and an all important secrecy key: silence.

Ghost in the Shell 1***, Ghost in the Shell Innocence2***
Ghost in the Shell 1***,
Very elegant graphics, story is interesting. The girls who are "plugged" in, with HongKong Kowloon grass root neon signs. Blade Runner style. As usual these animation films are steam punk type with old glamour cars, and cool cops, strange "Big Boss", pretty sexy tough girls. Lots of blood, phoom phoom phoom... merging of the "ghost" with a "body". Very nice.
Ghost in the Shell Innocence2***
Graphics are more and more beautiful than ever, beautiful colors flowing body forms, naked innocent geisha girl like character in pale white tint, ghostly - and shot dead even though she is just a robot... but robots also have soul, etc etc. Most people have implants here and there... hard to say who is not a robot... but the philosophical side of the story is glamourous for the very young. Not interesting for old folks who read too much already. Eye candy. Music is sweet sentimental, sorrowful. Very good.

Yooma Mayo's full sim installation:
I visited Yooma Mayo's full sim installation again, this time, I flew up and see, not only there are giant ants on the ground but huge flowers and butterflies above!
They flowers are so well modelled!
I called on Chiruno the airplane builder, he promptly produced a couple of planes and thus we flew around the flowers and amused ourselves - in the virtual world. ;)
A most magnificent stunning installation.
My viewer is a flat old style version - I like it, it looks like the old graphist pictures since its so flat, and Chiruno's viewer really show off the incandescent qualities of the bugs and flowers and ants.
So here they are, both flat screen shots and super illuminated shots from both our computers for your enjoyment!

Heart of Glass*** by Werner Herzog
genre: historical docudrama, experimental film : all actors worked under hynotism
Photography is very beautiful and atmospheric with long shots of rolling hills, clouds, with gd music. The story is rather slow moving and the acting wooden - due to the experimental method of hypnotising all the actors. So everybody is ad libbing from somewhere else. Story of a glass making town when the receipe for Ruby Red glass is lost, everybody slowly becomes mad and townspeople kill each other, fights, the town returns to a stony island without much inhabitants.

I am my films - Werner Herzog ***half
genre: interview of director Werner Herzog by Erwin Keusch
The film goes by a chronological order of works by Herzog. Herzog talks about what and in which circumstances where the films made, difficulties, actors, costumes, his own back ground, how he broke into houses as a youth to sleep here and there. Most interesting part is a recording of Klaus Kinski how he shouted at Herzog when he was a new director. I can imagine the crazy guy screaming non stop with spittles flying all over the place. Herzogs films are very authentic courageous self expressions. I watched Fitzcarldo many years ago and was amazed by the scenes shown in the movie, poetic, magical, powerful. But when I saw the making of this movie, thats when I discovered that they didnt "just hauled a boat over a mountain to make the film", not once, but twice!!
If you dont have the nerve to tackle difficulties which occurs in film making, you will never make it as a film maker.
He produces all his own films. Maybe his film making is his destiny? Such is the strength of his conviction of what should or not should be filmed? A natural film maker, it takes him 3, to 4 days to write a script as he could see everything in his head already. The movie plays in his head and he writes it down.
Inspires me to watch all his films.
