Marco Tempest: animation w Magic Pad
http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/124657-marco-tempest-tells-the-story-of-magic-at-ted-with-kinect-powered-augmented-reality
http://marcotempest.com/
Marco
Tempest, the techno-illusionist who shot to internet stardom last year
with his three-iPod/iPhone magic act, has followed up with a augmented
reality, Kinect-powered TED talk on the history of storytelling and
illusion. The six-minute video, dubbed “A magical tale,” is embedded
below.
Like the iPod illusion (embedded at the bottom of the story), Tempest combines sleight of hand and digital computers to create a very satisfying performance — but this time he goes one step further and weaves 3D augmented reality into the mix. On the hardware-side, Tempest simply uses an HD video camera and Microsoft’s Kinect, but the software — bit that actually produces the illusion — is really quite complex.
Tempest, working with two software development houses, Onformative and Checksum5, used VVVV to script the six-minute magic trick. VVVV is a hybrid programming environment that allows you to mash together video clips, real-time special effects, and the input from external devices. In “A magical tale,” every special effect is rendered in real time using a desktop PC — the particle effects, the face tracking (and re-mapping), and digital compositing (such as the big, 3D globe that Tempest steps inside); they’re all reactive to Tempest’s movements. The end result is impressive, if not quite as smooth or magical as the iPod/iPhone trick. Embedded below is a “making of” video that illustrates the technology behind the illusion.
Ultimately, Tempest says that “A magic tale” is more about engaging an audience than bona fide illusion. “Magic is a unique tool for pre-visualization,” he says. Instead of a magic trick with sleight of hand, the subject matter could instead be a video game, an interactive and interesting way to teach kids otherwise dull subjects, or even an augmented reality face-to-face Skype chat. It won’t be long until Kinect-like sensors are built into laptops and smartphones, don’t forget.

Typhoon Usagi, and super typhoon definition - strongest this year, I missed by a hairline! :)
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-09-22/china-hong-kong-brace-for-typhoon-usagi-as-flights-cut.html
Hong Kong maintained its third-highest storm signal, with the city braced for floods and hundreds of flights canceled, after Usagi made landfall as a severe typhoon in southern China.
The Hong Kong Observatory repeated the No. 8 Storm Signal at 4 a.m. local time, meaning winds of at least 63 kilometers (39 miles) an hour are expected, while downgrading Usagi to a tropical cyclone as it moves gradually away from the city.

Thousands of people were evacuated by the Chinese government from coastal areas in Fujian province as storms knocked out power lines, while travelers were stranded around the region with more than 440 flights affected at Hong Kong airport. Banks and the Hong Kong stock market will be closed in the morning should Signal 8 remain in force past 9 a.m.
“It’s probably the worst weekend ever,” Jessica Coelho, a Hong Kong-based human resources executive who was stranded in Singapore, said by telephone yesterday. “It’s a nightmare trying to get back. Everyone is trying to get on a plane home.”
The storm, rated the world’s strongest typhoon this year, was about 120 kilometers northwest of Hong Kong and moving west-northwest at about 22 kilometers an hour, the weather bureau said at 4 a.m. today. The city recorded maximum sustained winds of 73 kilometers an hour.
Trading Delays
According to Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd. (388) rules, premarket trading will be canceled today should Signal 8 remain in force between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., with morning trading to begin at least two hours after the warning is lowered. There will be no morning session if the alert is dropped after 9 a.m. and no trading for the day if it’s still up after noon.
Usagi made landfall in Shanwei city in China’s southern province of Guangdong at 7:40 p.m. local time yesterday, the provincial meteorological office said in a statement. It was expected to move northwest at a speed of about 20 kilometers an hour, and its strength will gradually weaken before it leaves Guangdong today as a tropical storm, it said. At least three people were killed by a fallen tree and broken window glass in the province last night, Xinhua News said.
Intercity rail services between Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong, Zhuhai and Shenzhen have stopped, according to the official microblog of operator Guangzhou Railway (Group) Corp. Some bullet train services were canceled yesterday, with others also scrapped today, it said.
In Fujian province, Usagi-related storms knocked out three power lines early yesterday, cutting off electricity to about 170,000 households before it was restored to all but 25,000 by noon, Xinhua said.
Taiwan Battered
Thousands of people were evacuated from low-lying coastal areas in the province, Xinhua reported. The flood-control headquarters ordered reinforced patrols so that emergency repairs could be carried out to prevent embankment breaches.
Usagi dumped as much as 70 centimeters (28 inches) of rain in Taiwan’s east on Sept. 21, left 12 people injured and disrupted more than 100 flights, the Central Emergency Operation Center said.
While passing Taiwan, it had sustained wind speeds of 205 kilometers per hour, making it a super typhoon, according to a tracking map on the Hong Kong Observatory website.
In the Philippines, flooding forced 242 people in the north of the country to flee their homes for temporary shelters on Sept. 18, the country’s disaster agency said.
Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. (293) and its Hong Kong Dragon Airlines Ltd. unit stopped some flights yesterday. Air China Ltd. (753) canceled 148 flights as of yesterday as airports in Xiamen, Shantou, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Hong Kong and Macau were affected. It may adjust more flights depending on weather conditions.
Temporary Shelters
“Rain bands of Usagi are now affecting Hong Kong and have brought over 70 millimeters of rainfall over parts of the territory,” the city’s observatory said in its latest bulletin.
The government opened temporary shelters, with 274 people seeking refuge, while it received 69 reports of fallen trees. As of 3 a.m., 13 people had sought emergency medical treatment at the city’s hospitals, with six of them discharged, the Hospital Authority said.
Grocery shelves were almost empty yesterday at a Tuen Mun ParknShop store in Hong Kong, with only a few packs of instant noodles left and most vegetables sold out.
“The supermarket is so packed,” Fanny Wong, 54, a housewife who bought six packs of instant noodles, two cans of luncheon meat and some eggs, said at the store in the district’s Pierhead Garden. “People are just stocking up everything, from instant noodles, bread to ingredients for hotpot such as mushrooms, pak choi and other vegetables. It took me about half an hour to check out.”
Hong Kong, situated off China’s southern coast, gets on average about six tropical cyclones annually, according to the weather bureau. Usagi is the most powerful storm to threaten Hong Kong since Severe Typhoon Utor in August.
A severe typhoon, one grade lower than a super typhoon, is equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, meaning “extremely dangerous winds will cause extensive damage,” according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center website.
“I came to Hong Kong for work last week and spent my weekend here,” Jay Johnson, a U.S.-based businessman, said yesterday. “It was a lovely stay but now it’s such a headache getting out. I need to be in Munich for a business meeting on Monday, but now I may need to cancel it.”

These are all very interesting. Looks like the analytical type of art work is one trend that has been the past main scientific investigation methods - art as a scientific investigation - are now merging with the older, alternative spiritual, the self directed internal (usually more Eastern philosophy rooted, mysticism) is now more coming into view - maybe due to the large number of people who needs spiritual guidance, psychological illness - artists are turning to looking inside the "unscientific" approach to a better spiritual life. There are many many such work all very interesting, including "art brut" artists, amateur high quality obsessional works, automatic spirit induced "voodoo" type of work, "dada", and also a "collect all" mad hand made scrapbook fantasy collection. L'Humanite is a communist newspaper, its spirit is to support everyone - from top to bottom. Mass public international concert event.
This is the first time I have attended this event, it was raining a fine mist, and large drops, and sometimes with a little sun. Huge amount of people showed up, mainly 20 something, up to grandma, grandpa type.
My friend says, hmm, these young people are singing to the songs, they know the texts by heart - unlike in his generation. (His generation was Genesis, Rolling Stones...)
Pop culture with representation from many countries, grilled food, wine, beer, mojitos, french fries. And super rides installed not far from the scene, gives the whole ambiances a fair ground atmosphere but without the junky griminess that usually accompanies fair grounds. Public toilets are very well organized, clean with toilet papers, and a person coming to check the "flushing" state of things... :)
Everything is running in an accessible, easy going way manner.
Many book stands, debates, smaller group concerts.
Sound very very good.

10 Giant size participation of Chinese contemporary art, in over 10 huge events. The total number of participants is about half of the entire Venice Biennale. People question the "commercial" nature of these works, incentives. But that is an entire subject thats worthy of a special magazine issue on the subject. Almost all of the participation are very accomplished. With so much stories to tell, if you have the capacity of story telling; content is not a problem. So, I would say. This part is definitely the most interesting part for viewers. It has so much energy and drive, vitality that the other works pale in life energy. It is due to context. China has had and still has an ongoing complex socio, historical battle going on everyday - no lack of interesting life experiences for anyone living in China today. Correspondingly if you were an artist in China, how could you be studying the color of pale Venetian green in an almost empty environment of the everyday? Unless, this is what is dreamt of and desired in the bigger context of congestion in the artists daily life - such as an environment like Hong Kong. I did not really see the Hong Kong Pavilion in detail, it seem to be very esthetically oriented, all empty pale green. Meanwhile, pale venetian green napkins are handed out as a souvenir of the show... hmm. Very esthetically purified in prettiness with a reference to Venices natural colors - Venetian green and pale pink. You could see these two colors everywhere, in context of an entire city with its liveliness and successful commercial enterprises down through history. I am not certain what i see in the Hong Kong pavilion is what is intended in this tranquil and stylized pavilion.
9 Ivory Coast pavilion. Very nice boats, heads, paintings.

- Le Fils du Roi d’Éric Lambé
- Ed.
